Alexander Glazunov (GLAH-zu-noff)Born August 10, 1865 in St. Petersburg, Russia (Some sources say July 29, 1865) Died March 21, 1936
Nationality: Russian Style/Period: Romantic/Early 20th Century
About the composer:
Glazunov’s mother was a pianist, and his father played the violin. Glazunov was a composer whose music appealed to people in Europe and America, at a time when other Russian composers were writing music that didn’t appeal to other countries. He was unusually bright and talented. In his music lessons he learned very quickly and couldn’t wait to go home and try out the things he had learned. Music seemed to come easily and naturally to him. He had an amazing memory. Sometimes he would write down music from memory after hearing it only once! When his first symphony was performed by an orchestra for the first time, other composers in the audience were very impressed, saying things like “The whole world will soon be talking about Glazunov!” He played several different instruments including violin, cello, and woodwinds. In his later years he was fascinated with jazz.
About the music:
Concert Waltzes (8-10 min) The Concert Waltzes were written in 1893 and 1894. They are bright, happy-sounding and they have a rhythm that would be great for dancing! The Seasons (38 min) “The Seasons,” written for a ballet in the year 1900, is Glazunov’s impression of the four seasons, beginning with winter. In each movement he uses certain instruments to create musical “colors” which describe his impressions of each season.
Suggested Activity:
Draw or paint your impressions of the seasons.
