Jimmy Orrante is a recent recipient of the 2005-06 Princess Grace Award for Choreography, one of the world’s highest arts honors. Now in his thirteenth season with BalletMet Columbus, the Los Angeles native has choreographed three new works for BalletMet, including “Ad Infinitum”, which premiered in the spring of 2007. He has also choreographed numerous times for Grand Valley State University and Blue lake Fine Arts Camp. Mr. Orrante attended the Los Angeles County High School for the Performing Arts under Don Hewitt, and went on to continue his training at North Carolina School of the Arts. He has attended the International Summer Workshop in Budapest, Hungary; studied modern dance in London; danced with Memphis Ballet and Nevada Dance Theatre; and toured internationally with Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp. A past recipient of the Violetta Boft Award, Mr. Orrante has performed as a guest artist with Dance Kaleidoscope in Los Angeles and Northern Ballet Theatre in England. This Mr. Orrante’s first European Tour as Artistic Director with the Blue Lake International Program.
Sonia Orrante recently retired from the stage after a 15 year career with BalletMet Columbus. A native of Columbus, Ohio, she graduated from BalletMet’s first pre-professional training program under Don Eryck and Violetta Boft, as well as attending Boston and San Francisco Ballet Schools. She was a 1991 Presidential Scholar in the Arts, Arts and Letters Finalist, and more recently a recipient of the Violetta Boft Award. During her career she enjoyed many title roles in such ballets as Sleeping Beauty, Romeo and Juliet, Nutcracker, Don Quixote, and Dracula, and originated roles in ballets created by Birgit Scherzer, Julia Adam, David Nixon, Peter Pucci, and Dwight Roden. During her tenure, she also guested with companies internationally including the National Ballet of Zimbabwe, Northern Ballet Theatre in Leeds, England, and the Cincinnati Ballet. After a six year affiliation with Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp, including four international tours, Sonia is excited to return as teacher and coach. This will be her first European Tour as Artistic Director with the Blue Lake International Program.
