Jazz ProgramBlue Lake’s Jazz Program is organized with ensembles of standard Big Band instrumentation. More advanced students are assigned to the Gold Jazz Band, while the others are assigned equally among the remaining ensembles. Enrollment is limited, and students are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.
The daily schedule for jazz students includes large ensemble rehearsals, sectionals, technique classes, three levels of improvisation, and a listening course. Students can complete their instructional day by choosing a Minor, allowing them to experience another area of arts interest while at camp. Click here for a complete listing of minor courses. Students also have the opportunity to hear various performances presented as a part of Blue Lake’s Summer Arts Festival, as well as participate in recreational activities and other camp events.
Intermediate and advanced jazz majors will have the opportunity to play in a jazz combo as well as a big band. Small groups will be selected by audition at camp. Each combo will rehearse and perform as a part of the jazz program. Additional improvisation study and arranging techniques will also be offered.Tim Froncek, faculty member at Grand Valley State University, Western Michigan University, and Grand Rapids Community College, is Director for the Blue Lake Jazz Department.
International Exchange ProgramDuring the summer sessions, each jazz major will have the opportunity to audition or interview for the International Jazz Ensemble, which will tour Europe in the summer of 2009 as a part of Blue Lake’s International Exchange Program. The ‘08 International Jazz Ensemble is under the direction of James Olcott. For additional information on this exciting opportunity, click here.
