In addition to our general scholarship fund, Blue Lake also maintains a number of endowed funds that provide financial assistance scholarships. Two in particular have been created recently and contributions toward the building of these funds would be gratefully accepted.
Jennifer Flanders Anderson Memorial Fund: Jennifer, who attended Blue Lake from 1993 to 1996 and participated in two tours with the International Band, passed away on May 17, 2007, after sustaining injuries in an automobile accident in Norfolk, Virginia. Jen was a native of Grand Haven, Michigan, and was set to graduate from a program at the U.S. Navy's Little Creek Amphibious Base in Norfolk.
Jen was a graduate of Grand Valley State University and a talented flutist and music educator who taught for three years in the Martin Public Schools in Martin, Michigan.
Jennifer's family has established a scholarship fund at Blue Lake in her memory that will benefit students from the Martin Public Schools in Martin, Michigan.
Don Warnaar Memorial Fund: Don Warnaar, Muskegon-area music educator, trumpeter, and leader of the Don Warnaar Big Band, passed away on August 31 at age 70 after a short illness.
Warnaar was also an early and long-time faculty member at Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp, where he gave private trumpet lessons, taught classes in trumpet technique, led sectional rehearsals, and played in the Festival Orchestra. Mr. Warnaar was an important figure in building the enrollment of the camp in its early years. He also taught music at Orchard View High School for 34 years, tutored music students at West Michigan Christian High School, and played in the West Shore Symphony Orchestra.
Mr. Warnaar’s wife, Joan, his daughters, and their families are creating a scholarship fund at Blue Lake in his memory that they hope will allow many deserving and talented children to further their musical and artistic pursuits at Blue Lake camp sessions, especially young trumpet players.
Those wishing to make a tax-deductible contribution to the Don Warnaar Scholarship Fund at Blue Lake may do so in one of two ways. Checks payable to “Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp” and indicating that they are gifts for the “Jennifer Flanders Anderson Fund” or the “Don Warnaar Fund” may be sent to the camp at 300 E. Crystal Lake Road, Twin Lake, Michigan, 49457.
Contributions may also be made online at Blue Lake’s secure website at:
https://z3rdcoas.securesites.com/bluelake/camp_pledge.html
In the "Comments" box near the bottom of the form, please indicate that the contribution is for the "Jennifer Flanders Anderson Fund" or “Don Warnaar Fund.”
Contributors may pay by credit card or request to be billed.
If you would like more information on the Flanders Anderson or Warnaar memorial scholarship funds or any of Blue Lake’s other endowed scholarship funds, please contact Blue Lake’s Development Office at 800-221-3796.

Billy Craig
(Blue Lake camper 1980 and IJE 1981)
Releases New CD
This Side of Somewhere |
In his youth, 1981 to be exact, Billy Craigoriginally from Big Rapids, Michigan, and now living in Chesterfield Township near Detroittoured Europe and Scandinavia as a guitarist with Blue Lake’s International Jazz Ensemble. “[I]t was an incredible experience and opportunity. Bruce Early [the IJE’s director that year] was great and the band was hot. We had a blast. . . .”
Billy’s youthful involvement in music has been transformed into a career in the music industry. After touring much of the United States as a solo artist and member of original and cover bands, he has now released a CD in a genre that he calls “folkrockcountry.” The CD, This Side of Somewhere, released in late 2007, was an exciting project, in that Billy and participating musicians traveled to the famous Sun Studio in Memphiswhere music giants such as Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, and U2 have all recordedto record the basic tracks for the CD. The energetic, fun, and tuneful songs seem to have a little something for everyone. Billy’s website (http://www.billycraigmusic.com) describes the new CD this way:
“Billy Craigsinger, songwriter, guitarist, and recording artistblends folk, rock, and country in an exciting new solo CD. With fourteen original tracks, including two powerful country songs, "Millionaire" and a song called "Jake Terry" about a dog Johnny Cash lost as a boy, Billy shows an edginess that comes close to the rock genre yet stays in step with today's modern country radio. Also, revealing a softer acoustic-based style reminiscent of James Taylor with songs like "Good Side of Life" and the lighter Jimmy Buffet induced "Flip Flops," he takes listeners on a stimulating musical journey.”
The CD has begun to get regular airplay in parts of the United States and as far away as France, Italy, England, and Australia. A follow-up project is already in the works, with a start date of Fall 2008.
